The so-called fertility rate as a hypothetical key figure indicates how many children women would have in the course of their lives if the age-specific birth rates of the respective calendar year applied to their entire lives. This figure was 1.46 in Essen in 2020.
Due to the Ruhr metropolitan area, several fertility centers have also established themselves in Essen. A sperm bank (cryobank) is also located in Essen. You can find more information about this under Costs and information about sperm banks.

What costs can you expect?
The costs for assisted reproduction are sometimes very high and, depending on the extent, hardly affordable out of one’s own pocket. Intrauterine insemination (IUI) involves placing the partner’s sperm directly into the woman’s uterus to increase the likelihood of pregnancy. Multiple attempts are often necessary.
In vitro fertilization (IVF) is far more complex. The woman’s retrieved eggs come into contact with the man’s treated sperm in the laboratory. If the fusion is successful, the fertilized egg is inserted into the woman’s uterus. The great advantage is the short distance the sperm have to travel.…
In its coalition agreement in November 2021, the new German government announced that unintentionally childless women would receive better support in the future. In addition, under certain circumstances, health insurance companies will cover a proportion of the costs of your treatment. If you would like to receive more information about this, you can arrange a consultation with our patient advisors here.
Important information on fertility treatment in Essen
The German government is concerned about the fulfillment of the Germans’ desire to have children. For this reason, there is the possibility to apply for state support from the federal and state governments. The “Guideline on the Granting of Allowances for the Promotion of Assisted Reproduction Measures by the State of North Rhine-Westphalia” serves as the basis for the funding of infertility treatments. This guideline stipulates that only couples whose main residence is in North Rhine-Westphalia and whose treatment takes place in a reproduction facility in NRW can benefit from the financial assistance. Unmarried heterosexual couples will be granted benefits in the form of an additional flat rate of 30% on certain maximum funding amounts for the first to third treatment cycles. In this regard, the new German government let it be known in its coalition agreement in November 2021 that unintentionally childless couples will receive better support in the future.
Further requirements are:
- Proven infertility by a doctor
- Demonstrable success of the fertility treatment
- Exclusive use of the partner’s egg and sperm cells
- Psychosocial counseling
- Age limit of the woman: 25–40
- Age limit of the man: 25–50

What are important criteria when choosing a fertility centre?
In order to fulfill your desire to have a child, you should choose a fertility clinic that meets your requirements and where you feel comfortable. When choosing a clinic, there are a number of aspects to consider in order to ensure that the therapy goes as smoothly as possible. The success of a therapy depends on various factors. Both the experience and qualifications of the medical team and the technological status of the laboratory equipment (for example, whether the clinic has a clean room laboratory) can have an impact on the success rate.
In addition to the success rate, there are other issues that can be decisive in the selection process. Good counselling on the choice of therapy, as well as personal care and the availability of the doctor can help you to get rid of worries and unanswered questions. In order to go through with the process of fulfilling your child wish with confidence, the experiences of previous patients can also give an indication of the quality or shortcomings of a practice.
Another aspect are the costs. To avoid surprises, fertility centres that maintain a high degree of price transparency are recommended. In the case of treatments with donor sperm, you should also make sure that there is a cooperation with an experienced sperm bank, as they often offer a larger selection of donor profiles and have many years of experience in the field of sperm donation.
When selecting our partner clinics, we always make sure that both heterosexual and homosexual couples or singles are treated.
